Today we wrap up our deep dive into Habit 5 from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Habit 5 – Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood is something we can start practicing today. We can always make that choice to seek to understand. It might not be easy, but the opportunity is always there, and the impact it can have on your professional and personal relationships is huge.
The time you invest you deeply understand the people you love, care about, work with, etc. brings tremendous dividends in open communication. Communication is free and easy. You have accurate information to work with which allows you to actually address the needs and concerns more quickly and effectively. The trust between the two people grows which increases the ability for you to influence each other. The more you understand someone, the more you will appreciate them.
This goes in your business and professional life as well. Make time to listen to and understand your employees. Make time to listen to and understand your clients. Make the human element as important as the financial or technical element. When you do you will see that they are all intertwined. When you listen, you learn.
