Full Recap:

The theme of the week turned out to be dealing with stress and handling the feeling of being overwhelmed. As discussed in almost every episode this week, getting overwhelmed by things is going to happen. It can’t be avoided sometimes, but how you handle it and respond is entirely in your control.

Today’s episode focuses on an interesting study recently performed at Rutgers University about how the simple task of spending 14 seconds focusing on happy memories immediately following a stressful situation can improve your mood. The study tested participants by creating a stressful situation and then having half the participants focus on happy memories and half the participants focus on “neutral” memories and then they measured the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. As expected, the participants that focused on happy memories were less affected by the stressful situation.

While you can’t keep annoying or overwhelming things from happening in your day, you can take control of how you respond. It is important to not let a stressful moment become a stressful day, week, month, etc. As much as possible you want to try and limit the lasting effects and get yourself back on track. Every little trick can help. Even if it only takes 14 seconds.
